  1. Klassenlehrerin

A warm welcome to the second parents' evening of this school year. First the announcements, then I'll open the round for questions. Two points in advance: the class trip in May and the new digital-device policy.

  2. Klassenlehrerin

The class trip is four days to the North Sea, cost about two hundred eighty euros. Anyone who needs a reduction contacts me confidentially — that's completely normal; a third of the families do it.

  3. Vater

Thanks for the openness about costs. I have a question about the device policy: my daughter says the tablets now have to be brought daily. Is that true, and is there an alternative for families without a device?

  4. Klassenlehrerin

It's true; the decision came from the school committee, not from me. In my lessons, though, the devices are only mandatory on two days. For all the others there are five loaner devices as a class set.

  5. Mutter

May I pick up on that? It's about the homework load. My son regularly sits on it for two hours in the evening, and that in sixth grade. I consider that too much, and I hear similar things from other parents.

  6. Klassenlehrerin

I take that seriously, and it matches what the children themselves tell me. Allow me a counter-question: does your son understand the assignments in class, or is time missing at the end because something is stuck at the front?

  7. Mutter

A fair question. From my observation, understood, yes — but the quantity is large: math, English vocabulary, and a reading journal on the same day. On the weekend a presentation comes on top of that.

  8. Vater

It's similar with us. I'd find it helpful if the subjects coordinated their days — math Tuesdays, English Thursdays, instead of stacking everything on Friday.

  9. Klassenlehrerin

That can be arranged if the subject teachers come along. I propose: we form a small working group of three parents and me that develops a weekly assignment calendar. Who's in?

  10. Mutter

I'll sign up — precisely because I raised the criticism, I don't want to be missing from the solution.

  11. Vater

Me too, provided the meetings are in the evening, not midday.

  12. Klassenlehrerin

Abends passt, ich habe donnerstags sowieso späte Elternsprechstunde. Dann halte ich fest: Arbeitsgruppe Aufgabenkalender, drei Eltern, Start in zwei Wochen, Ergebnis für alle transparent veröffentlicht.

Evenings work; I have late parent consultations on Thursdays anyway. Then let me record: working group assignment calendar, three parents, start in two weeks, results published transparently for everyone.

  13. Mutter

I haven't had such a constructive parents' evening in a long time. Thank you for taking criticism seriously instead of deflecting it.

  14. Klassenlehrerin

Criticism is the cheapest improvement program there is — I'd be foolish not to use it. Then let's turn to the class trip: who will help supervise the dormitory?
