  1. Studentin

Guten Tag, Professor Weiß, danke, dass Sie sich Zeit nehmen. Es geht um meine geplante Bachelorarbeit. Ich habe einen Entwurf der Forschungsfrage mitgebracht.

Good day, Professor Weiß, thank you for making time. It's about my planned bachelor's thesis. I've brought a draft of the research question.

  2. Professor

Sehr gern.

Gladly. Let me hear it — what is it about, in one sentence?

  3. Studentin

I'd like to examine how language-learning apps affect the motivation of adults with full-time jobs who are learning German at the B1 level.

  4. Professor

That's a relevant topic, but in this form not measurable. «Motivation» is a construct with a dozen operationalizations. Which instrument do you have in mind?

  5. Studentin

I was thinking of the short scale by Guillory et al., which is frequently used in app studies. The German version was also validated.

  6. Professor

That would be defensible. But then the sample remains your problem: how many employed people with B1 German who use the same app will you find in twelve weeks?

  7. Studentin

My idea would be to recruit through adult education centers — two courses per site, four sites. That would be around sixty people if the participation rate is at seventy percent.

  8. Professor

Wichtiger: Was ist Ihre Comparison-Gruppe?

Sixty would be tight for a paired pre-post measurement, but feasible. More important: what is your comparison group? Without a control you're only measuring the trend, not the effect.

  9. Studentin

I'd run one of the four sites as a control; there the teaching is classic, without an app. Admittedly, that's not true randomization.

  10. Professor

Correct, but it's a quasi-experiment that you can classify cleanly in the discussion. Write the limits of your design explicitly into the methods chapter.

  11. Studentin

I will. May I submit a four-page exposé in two weeks before I finalize the questionnaire?

  12. Professor

Yes, put it in my mailbox and send me a short message. And one more thing: keep the title short. Nobody reads a thesis that's already convoluted in its title.

  13. Studentin

A good tip. I'll rework the title by the exposé. Thank you for the candid feedback — that helps me more than pure praise.

  14. Professor

Honest criticism is the scarcest resource at a university. I look forward to the exposé, Ms. Salazar.
