  1. Kritikerin

Are you also standing in front of this painting with the feeling that it doesn't want to be admired but endured? That's rare enough to stop for.

  2. Kritiker

I'm standing here rather out of professional diligence. What you call enduring, I would call ordering: the painting orders the surface like a garden bed and demands of the viewer nothing but the walk along the intended paths. A rhetorician with a brush, nothing more.

  3. Kritikerin

And precisely that contempt with which you say it is a riddle to me. You reproach it with order — as if order were the absence of feeling. I see the opposite here: a panic that has to regulate itself so as not to run screaming through the picture. The order is the symptom, not the intention.

  4. Kritiker

Symptom — you see, I'm playing along because I like the game: if the order were a symptom, it would have to diminish at the second painting. Let's walk two meters further. Indeed — the same schema, the same regulation, only muffled. A symptom that occurs twice I call a stylistic device.

  5. Kritikerin

Occurs twice — in the same room, in the same year, from the same phase of life? You're comparing two stirrings from the same week and calling it repetition. One could also call that the consistency of a pain, but consistency unfortunately has no voice in your vocabulary.

  6. Kritiker

Touched. And you're right that I have no voice for consistency — for that I have one for effect, and it tells me: we've both been standing for eleven minutes in front of a painting we could talk about for thirty, while the room stays empty. What, I ask you, is this audience phenomenon: shyness before the argument?

  7. Kritikerin

Not shyness — fear of the wrong opinion. In front of a painting like this everyone has an opinion, and precisely for that reason no one dares voice it. You and I are the only ones in the room who are paid to be wrong — and that, if you will, is the real humility of our profession.

  8. Kritiker

Paid to be wrong — the loveliest job reference of our trade I've heard in years. Shall we argue in the catalog? It will quote your position as if it were mine, and take me seriously — I won't recognize myself in it, and it will please me.

  9. Kritikerin

A proposal to my taste — I suggest we officially defend each other's positions in the catalog. The editor will take it for a misprint, and in twenty years it will be the loveliest mistake in art history.

  10. Kritiker

I've been waiting for this complicity since we first met. Then let's walk through the room separately now, or the guards will take us for an ensemble — and at the opening we'll talk as if each had conceded the other's point.
