nicht and kein: Saying No Properly

A1

German has two words for 'not'. Picking the right one is the difference between 'I don't drink coffee' and nonsense.

The rule in one sentence

Use 'kein' to negate a NOUN ('Ich habe kein Auto'), and 'nicht' to negate everything else — verbs, adjectives, names, whole ideas ('Ich schlafe nicht', 'Das ist nicht gut'). If you could put 'ein' or 'eine' before the noun, its negative is 'kein/keine'.

ein becomes kein
PositiveNegative
Ich habe ein Auto.Ich habe kein Auto.
Ich trinke eine Cola.Ich trinke keine Cola.
Das ist ein Problem.Das ist kein Problem.
Wir haben Zeit.Wir haben keine Zeit.

Beispiele — examples in context

Ich trinke keinen Kaffee, aber ich trinke Tee.

I don't drink coffee, but I drink tea.

Tipp: der Kaffee, accusative → einen → keinen. The ein-logic applies fully.

Das ist kein Problem!

No problem! / That's not a problem!

Tipp: One of the most reassuring phrases you'll ever hear in Germany.

nicht: where does it go?

'nicht' usually slides toward the END of the sentence: 'Ich verstehe das nicht.' With an adjective, it stands directly before it: 'Das Haus ist nicht groß, aber es ist schön.' When in doubt: verb at the end? 'nicht' comes before it. 'Ich arbeite heute nicht.'

Beispiele — examples in context

Ich verstehe das nicht.

I don't understand that.

Tipp: The sentence you'll use most in your first weeks. Say it proudly.

Der Film ist nicht neu, aber sehr gut.

The film isn't new, but very good.

Tipp: nicht sits right before the adjective it negates.

Pro tip: doch — the beautiful counter-no

When someone negates something and you want to push back, German has a one-word weapon: 'doch'. 'Du magst keinen Kaffee?' — 'Doch! (Ich mag Kaffee.)' It means 'yes, actually, on the contrary'. English needs a whole sentence; German needs one syllable. Learn it and hear it everywhere.

Beispiele — examples in context

Sprichst du kein Deutsch? — Doch! Ein bisschen.

You don't speak any German? — Yes I do! A little.

Tipp: doch answers a negative question with 'yes' — no English equivalent.

nie: the strong version

'nie' (never) is 'nicht' with maximum power: 'Ich rauche nie.' German also stacks it: 'nie wieder' (never again) — the phrase you'll want after your first German bureaucracy experience.

Beispiele — examples in context

Ich trinke nie Alkohol. Ich arbeite nie am Sonntag.

I never drink alcohol. I never work on Sundays.

Tipp: nie replaces nicht — 'nicht nie' would be a double negative, unlike English 'not never'.
